Word came down today that Saturday’s game at the New England Revolution has been postponed on account of the weather. While we would definitely like to be watching our Lions again, this should be viewed as a blessing in disguise as we are down 2 right backs and new signing Scott Sutter hasn’t even made it to the States on account of Visa paperwork. Additionally, this is just one less game that Kaka will miss after suffering a pulled hamstring 8 minutes into the season opener against NCYFCYCFYCCFYC. The new date for the match is now on September 2 at 7pm ET. The Boys in Purple return to action next Saturday at 7:30pm against the Philadelphia Union at Orlando City Stadium.
Orlando City continued to rebuild their defense today as they announced that they have signed Brazilian left back Victor ‘PC’ Giro to a 4 year contract pending his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Ticket. PC, as he likes to be called, previously played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies (formerly of the NASL) during the past season. “He is a young, energetic and skillful player that will give us creativity and versatility up the left side,” Lions General Manager Niki Budalic said.
PC joins the recently acquired Donny Toia on the left side of the backline which had been a problem area all through the 2016 season. Additionally, PC, who is only 22, can play left midfield and left wing which will make him a great fit for the presumed 4-4-2 diamond that Lions Head Coach Jason Kreis is rumored to be installing. PC came up through the Brazilian Corinthians’ academy system before joining the NASL. This is a great pickup for Orlando City and a strong statement that Kreis feels the defense was the major weakness that needed to be addressed in the offseason.
The defensive line depth chart is now starting to look like the following pending the rumored pickup of Sertic:
Toia Johnson Sertic Ramos
PC Matteos Aja Redding
