Lions fall to Wilmington 3-1

Wilmington, NC.- Sloppy defense and an apparent lack of interest spelled defeat for Orlando City for the 4th time in seven games.

The bad news started for the Lions when in the 3rd minute, a poorly handled pass by the defense was stolen by Hammerheads forward Corben Bone for a one on one chance on Miguel Gallardo that wound up in the left corner of the net.

Orlando’s only goal would come on an equalizer in the 41st minute when Austin da Luz headed in a cross from Ramos. Orlando kept up pressure for the rest of the half, but the teams went to the locker with a tie game.

The second half showed more spirit with the Lions having numerous shots deflected or saved by Hammerheads keeper Bradley Stuver.

But Wilmington would break the stalemate in the 61st minute with a clean up off a Gallardo save by Mark-Anthony Kaye, giving the Hammerheads a 2-1 advantage.

Wilmington closed out the scoring in extra time when Sammy Ochoa took a cross from Kaye behind the City defense and slotted the ball into the left side of the net.

Orlando will have a chance to avenge this result when they return to Wilmington on Wednesday, September 3rd.
