The teams responsible for the last 4 USL Pro championships clearly came out with
something to prove.
In what turned out to be a very spirited match between the Lions and the Battery, F.C.
Dallas loanee Brian Span earned his debut goal in the 74th minute to give Orlando City the
3 points and the top of the USL Pro table.
Orlando controlled the ball for the majority of the match with sharp passing and brilliant
ball handling from Darwen Ceren and Tommy Tyler. Tempers were boiling over early and
often with several incidents of shoving and physically rough play, but the officials let them
go at it for the most part. And make the most of it they did, though Orlando clearly had the
upper hand in the possession department.
Despite spending the majority of the game in the Charleston half, the Battery weren’t
content to let Orlando Goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo get complacent. There were several
very good chances created by the Battery, including one that was cleared off the line in a
spectacular save by Kevin Molino.
“Apart from a few isolated incidents, I thought that it would have been a travesty had we
not won the game tonight,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “Overall I’m pleased with the
win, and I’m pleased that Cobi [Brian Span] got a goal because he’s been working very
hard in training.”
The Lions are back in action on April 22 at F.C. Dallas.
